Adding 5, from 5 + 0 to 5 + 12. Every problem on the sheet is drawn from that set and nothing outside it.

Where adding 5 goes wrong

Five matches a hand, which makes it the most visually secure addition there is. 5 + n is one full hand and then n more, and 5 + 5 = 10 becomes the first anchor of base ten. Values in this range usually automate quickly, so elapsed time carries more information here than the score does.

Why is adding 5 easier than adding 4 or 6?
Five maps onto one whole hand, so the child sees the quantity instead of counting it.
What makes 5 + 5 important?
It is the first anchor to ten, which every crossing-ten strategy later depends on.
What should I look at on a 5s addition sheet?
Time rather than score. Most children reach full marks here quickly.
