A timed sheet on dividing by 3
Dividing by 3, from 0 ÷ 3 to 36 ÷ 3. Every problem on the sheet is drawn from that set and nothing outside it.
Choose 20, 50 or 100 problems and a limit of 1, 2 or 5 minutes, then print the sheet with its answer key on page two, or start the timer and type into the same grid. The problems are drawn again every time the page loads, so a second sheet is not a copy of the first. How the counts and limits work is on its own page, along with what a timed test does and does not measure.

Where dividing by 3 goes wrong
The digit-sum rule from multiplication carries straight over as a check: add the digits of the dividend, and if the total is not a multiple of 3 then 3 does not divide it. Reading the problem aloud as “how many 3s are inside 27” works noticeably better for most children than “27 divided by 3”.
Three that come up
- How can I tell if a number divides by 3?
- Add its digits. 27 gives 9, so it divides; 26 gives 8, so it does not.
- What is a better way to read 27 ÷ 3?
- How many 3s fit in 27. That phrasing turns division back into the multiplication fact the child already knows.
- Which 3s division facts are missed most?
- 21 ÷ 3 and 24 ÷ 3, the same two that are weakest in the 3 times table.
What the standards and the critics actually say
Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (PDF), page 23 — 3.OA.C.7 “By the end of Grade 3, know from memory all products of two one-digit numbers.” thecorestandards.org — CCSSI_Math Standards.pdf
NCTM — Procedural Fluency in Mathematics (position statement) “Timed tests do not assess fluency and can negatively affect students, and thus should be avoided.” nctm.org — Procedural Fluency in Mathematics
youcubed — Fluency Without Fear “For about one third of students the onset of timed testing is the beginning of math anxiety.” youcubed.org — Fluency Without Fear
