A timed sheet on dividing by 6
Dividing by 6, from 0 ÷ 6 to 72 ÷ 6. Every problem on the sheet is drawn from that set and nothing outside it.
Choose 20, 50 or 100 problems and a limit of 1, 2 or 5 minutes, then print the sheet with its answer key on page two, or start the timer and type into the same grid. The problems are drawn again every time the page loads, so a second sheet is not a copy of the first. How the counts and limits work is on its own page, along with what a timed test does and does not measure.

Where dividing by 6 goes wrong
Dividing by 6 requires both 2 and 3 to work — the dividend has to be even and its digits have to sum to a multiple of 3. One sheet therefore exposes whether either of the earlier ranges is shaky. And 42 ÷ 6 is the most-missed cell here for precisely the reason 6 × 7 is the most-missed cell in multiplication.
Three that come up
- How do you know a number divides by 6?
- It has to pass both tests: even, and digits adding to a multiple of 3. 48 passes; 46 fails the digit test.
- Which 6s division fact is hardest?
- 42 ÷ 6 = 7, the mirror of 6 × 7 = 42, which is also the most-missed fact in the 6 times table.
- Can I split dividing by 6?
- Yes. Divide by 2, then by 3 — 72 ÷ 2 = 36, 36 ÷ 3 = 12.
What the standards and the critics actually say
Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (PDF), page 23 — 3.OA.C.7 “By the end of Grade 3, know from memory all products of two one-digit numbers.” thecorestandards.org — CCSSI_Math Standards.pdf
NCTM — Procedural Fluency in Mathematics (position statement) “Timed tests do not assess fluency and can negatively affect students, and thus should be avoided.” nctm.org — Procedural Fluency in Mathematics
youcubed — Fluency Without Fear “For about one third of students the onset of timed testing is the beginning of math anxiety.” youcubed.org — Fluency Without Fear
