Where dividing by 8 goes wrong

Dividing by 8 is halving three times — 56 → 28 → 14 → 7. Three steps push errors out to double or half the correct answer rather than near it, and comparing against the matching divide-by-4 answer pins down which step was dropped: the 8s answer should be exactly half of it.

How do you divide by 8 in your head?
Halve three times. 96 ÷ 8 goes 96 → 48 → 24 → 12.
Why are 8s division errors large?
Each skipped halving doubles the answer, so the mistake is never small.
How does this relate to dividing by 4?
An 8s quotient is exactly half the matching 4s quotient, which makes the 4s sheet a quick check.
